Ruud Gullit’s side added another three points to their Eredivisie tally with a comfortable win against FC Twente Sunday to top the league table after four matches. Salomon Kalou grabbed the limelight with two second-half goals, adding to a Shinji Ono strike before the break. The match also marked the Feyenoord debut of new Portuguese signing Bruno Basto, who put in a fine display in the heart of the home defence alongside Patrick Paauwe.
Despite being without the suspended Hossam Ghaly Feyenoord looked relatively comfortable throughout. The visitors hardly created a chance all afternoon.
That said, it was FC Twente that took the lead in De Kuip against the run of play on 37 minutes. Feyenoord had racked up nine corners by the time the visitors won their first, but that stat counted for nothing when Zomer got his head to the ball in the area to power in the first goal of the afternoon.
Feyenoord refused to panic however. The first half-hour had thrown up chances for Kalou, Bosschaart and Castelen and the home side seemed to sense that they could get back into pole position without losing their composure.
The reward came before the break, as Ono needed just one touch to redirect Castelen’s pass into the back of the net from the edge of the box to send the sides in all-square at the turnaround.
The home side continued their relentless pressure in the second half and the first to profit was Salomon Kalou. The Ivorian recently talked about the possibility of taking Dutch citizenship, but he looked positively Norwegian in slaloming through the Twente defence in the fifty-third minute, finishing his solo move with a searing drive across goal that had Boschker well beaten. Feyenoord had the lead for the first time in the match.
The home side continued to look the side most likely to as the game wore on, but it wasn’t until the last ten minutes that Feyenoord pulled clear. Castelen raced into the penalty area, finding Kalou, who placed the ball into the far corner.
With the points in the bag Gullit sent on Lazovic and Buffel for Kuyt and Kalou, and though the Serb went close with a lob and a shot that was beaten down by Boschker the game ended without any further scoring.
