BACK TO EREDIVISIE BUSINESS AT DE KUIP

Feyenoord will be burning to put the disappointment of a fortnight ago behind them when FC Twente come to De Kuip Sunday in the latest round of Eredivisie matches. Due to the international calendar the Rotterdammers have not had the chance to exorcise the ghost of the second-rate draw at Vitesse. But coach Gullit feels it’s time to look forwards. ‘I spoke with the lads who found it important about what went wrong in Arnhem’. Another three points are up for grabs.

Bruno Basto is available for selection for the first time since his transfer from Girondins de Bordeaux. The 26-year-old has now been with Feyenoord for over a week, ‘Basto has made a good impression, he’s training well and he has an idea of how we play,’ confirmed coach Gullit. ‘It’s just that his moving house has meant he’s done nothing for a while.’

That would seem to give hope to Patrick Mtiliga, who has been in fine form this season. Nevertheless, there is a distinct possibility that the Portuguese will play at some point Sunday. Gullit again: ‘I’m not afraid to throw him in; the lad has enough experience. I believe he’s played 140 times for Bordeaux and he’s also played European matches. He has enough experience.’

Dirk Kuyt and Romeo Castelen pull on the red and white of Feyenoord again after a week in Orange. Gullit was enthusiastic about his two new internationals. ‘In the circumstances the lads played well. Both Dirk and Romeo made the most of it. When I say the circumstances I mean that they are used to playing in a different position. For me left wing is not at option for Castelen at Feyenoord, I think he’s better on the right. But it’s good to know.’

Gullit is pleased to see Feyenoord supplying players to the national team once again and expects it will become a more regular occurrence. ‘I think more players will be considered in the near future. Paauwe for instance is playing well, he’s as good as ever or maybe even better. He’ll be knocking on the door, just as Bosschaart will of course.’

Feyenoord face FC Twente without the injured Gerson Magrão (shin), Patrick Lodewijks (calf), Sebastián Pardo (hamstring) and Ramon van Haaren (knee). Another absentee is Hossam Ghaly, who had a three-match suspension slapped on him for elbowing Willem II’s Danny Matthijsen three weeks ago. The Egyptian’s absence makes the maths easy for Gullit, who has four candidate midfielders over in Ono, Bosschaart, Goor and Castelen. Karim Saidi is also in the running for a place in the starting line-up after recovering from a groin complaint
