Left-sided defender Bruno Basto has signed for Feyenoord on a two-season contract, after passing his medical Friday. The 26-year-old Portuguese comes on a free transfer from crack French club Girondins de Bordeaux, where he held down a first-team place for five seasons. Red tape will keep him out of Sunday’s match at Vitesse, but the player will be available for the home jam with FC Twente two weeks down the line. Basto is also available for Feyenoord’s Uefa Cup campaign that starts in Norway 16 September.
Basto made the move from Portuguese third division outfit Alverca to Benfica back in 1997. After earning a first-team place at the Stadium of Light he moved north to ‘des Girondins’ in 2000.
‘We are very happy to sign a defender of Basto’s calibre,’ confirmed Technical Director Mark Wotte. ‘He comes from a big French club and he is an asset for us.’ The deal comes with an option on a third season.
