Gabor Babos was voted the year’s best goalkeeper in the Eredivisie at the annual VVCS Players Association Gala Monday. The new Feyenoord number one was nominated for the award three years ago also, but didn’t land the big prize then. But this time he got the nod and the Hungarian admitted to an indescribable feeling of pride and not a little emotion. ‘I would have liked my father to have seen this.’
Babos was very happy to receive the backing of his colleagues. Because those are the ones that can evaluate what you do best, says the keeper. ‘That’s why I’m so proud of this. Every nominee is a winner. But now that I have been voted the best I am very pleased. It does make me emotional, because I would have liked my father who passed away last year to see this.’
Babos wants to win the crown next year too, but is under no illusions about the size of his task. ‘At a top club like Feyenoord a keeper has less to do of course,’ says Gabor. ‘It’s about being there when you are needed. Jurek Dudek did that at Feyenoord, because he won this prize. I’ll be going all out this season and I hope to be in the hunt for Goalkeeper of the Year next year again.’
