Feyenoord continued their preseason preparations with a victory over amateur side DVS’33 in Ermelo Monday. Goal-scorers in the 5-0 win were Kuyt (2), Buffel, Paauwe and Castelen. Coach Gullit made seven changes in the second half, including Brazilian new boy Gerson Magrao, starting with almost the same team as in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. The only player missing as the sides lined up for kick off was Romeo Castelen, who was replaced by Ebi Smolarek.

Feyenoord took an early lead through Dirk Kuyt, with an assist by Ebi Smolarek, who looked sharp again in Ermelo. ‘I’m just happy to be fully fit and able to play football again,’ explained the Pole, who was less enthusiastic about the overall performance. ‘I didn’t really go well. Not for me personally or for the team really. The automatism isn’t there yet, but maybe that’s logical at this stage of preseason. Thankfully there are a few games still before the league kicks off. I think you’ll only be able to make a first estimate of how strong this team is after the games in Germany’, said Smolarek. Feyenoord take part in the Alpen Cup there next week.

Buffel and Paauwe increased Feyenoord’s lead to three by the break.

Feyenoord found things a little tough-going with a good amateur side, but much of that was down to a lack of rhythm. ‘Players were finding it hard to find each other,’ admitted Gullit. But you shouldn’t forget that we have trained hard. You saw that in our play this evening.

Gerson Magrao launched his Feyenoord career by replacing Shinji Ono and was fairly anonymous to start with. But as the second half wore on, the newcomer began to find his feet. A fine through-ball set up Kalou, whose shot rattled against the bar, and that was followed by an impressive cross that found Dirk Kuyt, although that chance also went begging.
