‘The confidence is back,’ said a satisfied Feyenoord head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst on Friday afternoon, two days ...
New Feyenoord coach Ruud Gullit saw his charges get the better of amateur outfit ASWH Friday, as the Rotterdammers eventually ran in nine goals without reply in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. Smolarek (3), Buffel (2), Kuyt (2), Goor and Song all got their names on the scoresheet, although Glenn Loovens was pulled off with a knee injury. The coach was happy enough with how his side performed, despite some frustration early on. ‘I’m nicely surprised with the way we played this evening.’
‘You saw the team still had to get to used to each other at the beginning, but we got better and better as the game wore on. I was especially satisfied with the way my team pressed. Although we have only just started, I did recognise some patterns we have practised these past few days. I saw a foundation to work on.’
Gullit was satisfied with his debutants Babos, Goor, Bosschaart and Castelen. ‘They did well. I think they all want to win a regular place as fast as possible and show what they can do from the start. While that resulted in a very untidy opening period, I think that’s nothing but positive. It shows that the players understand that they actually pick themselves.’
Feyenoord needed some time to get into gear and ended the first half with just a single goal on the scoreboard. The strike came from with the compliments of Thomas Buffel as late as the 38th minute.
‘Don’t forget we’ve only just started,’ cautioned Gullit. ‘Till now we’ve focussed on sharpening up fitness-wise. We’ll not take the next step till next week, when we’ll mainly work on our explosiveness. If you keep that in mind, you cannot be anything but satisfied with the way we performed this evening.’
They was to be a sour note, however. Just before the break Glenn Loovens was forced out of the game with a minor knee problem. His place was taken by Chris Gyan.
But the goals started to flow in the second half, with Bart Goor getting his debut goal before Dirk Kuyt chipped in the finest of the evening for the third.
The last half an hour was a breeze, with Smolarek, Song, Kuyt and Smolarek again ratcheting up the score to seven by 75 minutes. The home side tightened up their defence as the last quarter of an hour ticked down, but Romeo Castelen grabbed another after replacing Smolarek, then Buffel netted right at the death to make it nine.
