‘The confidence is back,’ said a satisfied Feyenoord head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst on Friday afternoon, two days ...
There was a worthy send off for departing coach Van Marwijk Sunday at De Kuip as Feyenoord decimated FC Zwolle in front of a sell-out crowd to wrap up a tough Eredivisie season. Dirk Kuyt and Danko Lazovic battled for the limelight and both came away with a hat-trick, while Patrick Paauwe completed the rout. The result left the visitors out for the count, as scores elsewhere condemned them to relegation. It all meant there was a party atmosphere at the end of the game, as the Legion said farewell to Van Marwijk, Metgod and Van Wonderen, too name but a few.
Feyenoord grabbed the lead in the first minute, when Lazovic netted. He’d done it again within eight minutes to double the lead and when Kuyt made it three on the quarter of an hour there was no doubt that the home fans were in for a great afternoon.
By the half hour mark Kuyt had struck for his second of the match and Feyenoord started to grandstand. Even so, the chances continued to flow. Buffel went close on a couple of occasions, before picking up a yellow card for diving in the area. The acting was no doubt on referee Temmink’s mind not long after when Smolarek was hauled to the sod and should have had a penalty. Temmink waved the home side’s claims away.
Kees van Wonderen was brought on after the break and the substitution didn’t affect the one-way flow of the game in the least. Patrick Paauwe was next to score, netting a free kick on fifty, before the visitors grabbed a goal of their own through Lim Duan. The strike could hardly be called a consolation for FC Zwolle however, who were spiralling towards relegation as the minutes ticked down.
Feyenoord simply continued to add to their tally. Kuyt completed his hat-trick on eighty minutes and, not to be outdone, Lazovic completed his a minute later to make it seven.
