Feyenoord were clearly the better side from the kick off, but the game was played at a slow pace and while Buffel and Kuyt went close, the Rotterdam attack was clearly missing penetration.
There was no help coming from referee Haverkort in the first forty-five minutes either, during which three attackers were floored in the home penalty area without consequence.
Vitesse gained in confidence as the game wore on without a Feyenoord breakthrough and even had a go on goal themselves on 20. One-time Feyenoorder Bert Konterman failed to find the target.
A little later Rink had a long-range dig and then Van de Beukering had the best home chance of all just ahead of the break. Feyenoord counted their blessings when the striker slipped as he set himself up for a poke.
In the second half Feyenoord drove up the tempo, but initially failed to create much as a result. It wasn’t until 65 minutes that the visitors came close. Kuyt putting his shot past the post after a cute Rotterdam move.
Bert van Marwijk brought on Lazovic for Van Persie on 68 and ten minutes later Feyenoord’s most impressive player Van Haaren made way for Gill Swerts after picking up a knock in a tussle with Rankovic.
Pressure continued to be exercised on the Vitesse backline, but without any tangible result. Lazovic had the best chance in added-on time, but only found the side-netting from close range and in the end Feyenoord left Arnhem still looking for their first win at the Gelredome.
