A Van Wonderen stumble in the first minute let in N’Kufo, who looked like opening the scoring when he rounded Lodewijks, but Van Wonderen raced back to clear spectacularly.
Ten minutes in, Buffel broke the deadlock to give the home side some real impetus. Feyenoord went on to take complete control of proceedings and made an attractive spectacle of it, with much to excite in attack, as all four forward players were in creative mood
The same went for the midfielders, even without Shinji Ono. Pardo en Schreuder looked on song, and it was Schreuder who lobbed the ball behind the Twente defence for Kuyt. His pass found Buffel, who tucked the ball away in the far corner.
In defence only Song looked out of tune, but the Korean appeared to pick up the rhythm as the match wore on.
The home side extended their lead on 35. Van Wonderen intercepted the ball and he played Buffel through. The Belgian found his partner Kuyt, who netted at the back post.
Buffel might have made it three before the break, but his shot rattled off the crossbar.
Feyenoord continued to run the show in the second period. Lazovic came on halfway through the half for Smolarek and almost scored with his first touch, but the goal ultimately fell to Thomas Buffel, his second of the afternoon.
Twente grabbed a consolidation via a Sjaak Polak free kick, but the a victory was never in doubt. Van Marwijk used the opportunity to introduce Jean Carlos Dondé and the Brazilian almost got a goal on 84, but his shot went just past the post.
Before the end Buffel might have grabbed his hat-trick, but he was unable to get his drive on target.
The goal did come in the last minute at the other end of the pitch, when Zomer rattled in a free kick to make it 3-2.
