EARLY OPPORTUNITY TO GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS

Feyenoord make a quick return to action Wednesday when Vitesse come to De Kuip in the Amstel Cup. The Rotterdammers are still reeling from Saturday’s 4-1 reverse at the hands of FC Twente and coach Van Marwijk will be hoping that his men can put the record straight. Vitesse are currently kicking round the lower reaches of the Eredivisie, so on paper the Arnhemmers would appear to be an ideal adversary.

‘My players are in shock after the FC Twente match,’ admitted a flue-ridden Van Marwijk Tuesday. ‘It didn’t make sense, because this is a healthy group that’s very easy to coach. I don’t exactly know how this could happen. Perhaps the game was approached too lightly. No one expected this.’ Tuesday gives Feyenoord the chance to get over the experience. That said, there’s a great deal riding on the fixture as Feyenoord’s rollercoaster Eredivisie form, coupled with UEFA Cup elimination, means that the Rotterdammers have to stay in the national cup competition to be in with a chance of winning anything this campaign. Feyenoord played the Arnhem outfit off the park earlier this season, recording a 3-0 victory, but with a decimated central defence, things may be different this time round. Patrick Paauwe’s hamstring keeps him out of the match, while Peter van den Berg picked up an ankle knock during Monday training. He can scarcely walk, so Chris Gyan would appear destined for a recall.
