Blaisse N’Kufo gave the home side the lead in the opening stages and it was Twente’s just deserts. Feyenoord looked unable to bridge the gap between midfield and attack, while the Enschede outfit threatened the visitors’ goal with regularity.
It came as no surprise therefore when Twente doubled their lead through N’Kufo, who beat Van den Berg, nutmegged Swerts and shot hard but true across Lodewijks into the net.
Feyenoord were unable to make a mark on the first half, especially in midfield, where an poorly Ono was ineffectual. That meant that the forward line was typically isolated.
Van Wonderen did move into a forwards position once and his one-two with Kuyt gave him a chance to shoot, but Cees Paauwe pushed the ball away for a corner.
And it was from that corner that Kuyt rose to nod in Van Persie’s ball to half the arrears.
The goal looked to have given Feyenoord fresh hope and with Pardo on for Ono the Rotterdammers had more vivacity at the start of the second period.
And yet it was the home side that grabbed the next goal. John took advantage of space in the area to drive the ball into the far corner of Lodewijks’s net for three-one.
Things went downhill from there for Feyenoord. Schreuder had little choice but to stop John with his hand on 65 and the fact that the foul was committed in the box meant that the error resulted in a penalty. Pollack scored to make it 4-1, while Schreuder was yellow-carded, which means he’ll miss next week’s game at RKC.
Five minutes before time, Pardo pulled a goal back, but it didn’t ease the pain, despite being a fine effort as Feyenoord suffered a fourth Eredivisie defeat of the season.
