With Christmas fast approaching, the 2003 part of the calendar wraps up next week when RKC Waalwijk travel to De Kuip. But first Feyenoord will be looking to give their fans an early present in the form of three points against FC Twente Saturday evening when the sides meet in the Eredivisie. Coach Van Marwijk picks from a full squad of players. Only long-term wounded De Nooijer, Lazovic and Leonardo are out of the picture.

Zoetebier, Smolarek, Song and Snoyl are all back in the frame after a bout of flu, while Alfred Schreuder returns after a one-match suspension that kept him out of the ADO Den Haag fixture. The coach admitted a certain opulence in the breadth of his squad, although he was keen not to exaggerate his riches. ‘I now have twenty fit players available to me, which I haven’t had for three and a half years. I’ll tell the lads what the team is tomorrow, so I won’t be saying anything about who’s playing and who isn’t.’ Tight-lipped as the coach is, the probability is that Ramon van Haaren will make way for Ferne Snoyl, although: ‘I thought Ramon played well against ADO. You’ll see whether he’s in the team again on Saturday.’ Further up the field, last week’s game saw the Feyenoord forwards put in a good performance. ‘I’ve said before that Robin van Persie has to be more effective in the things he does and he was against ADO. I complemented him on that. It’s just a pity that he became a little untidy near the end.’ Anthony Lurling was another one to get a ‘pass’ from his coach, although he was less enthusiastic about Dirk Kuyt and Thomas Buffel. That said, Van Marwijk recognises that his strikers cannot have their day every time they enter the footballing arena. ‘We are creating enough opportunities in any event. We could have had seven or eight and I’m satisfied when we score from fifty per cent of those. We got close to that against ADO. And that Buffel has been dry for so long? That’s a fleeting phenomenon.’ The Belgian has another chance to find the net in Enschede against an FC Twente coached by fellow countryman Vandereycken. The game is even more special to Patrick Paauwe, who lines up against his brother, FC Twente keeper Cees Paauwe. The home side have had a disappointing start to the season and FC Twente will be looking to strut their stuff to full effect against their illustrious visitors. Feyenoord on the other hand will be looking to repeat last term’s 5-1 victory in Enschede.
