EARLY GOALS TAKE GLOSS OFF FOR YOUNGSTERS Coach Bert van Marwijk relied on two young defenders to show some maturity in the Amsterdam Arena in Sunday’s big match and both Ferne Snoyl and Gill Swerts put in good performances. A great experience for the both of them, although the result could have been a better one. ‘Obviously it’s great to play in a match like that, but the loss means that the prevailing emotion is disappointment,’ admits Snoyl.

Snoyl feels that Feyenoord were very unlucky in the Arena. ‘Their first goal was lucky and our mistake allowed them to score the second. It was only the eleventh minute and we were already chasing the game. After the 2-0 we did start to play better, but Ajax allowed us to. We also forced some chances, but we could never finish them off, the same as against Vitesse and Teplice. The loss means that the championship is a long way away, but we have to remain realistic. First we have to ensure that our game improves, then we’ll see where that takes us.’ Gill Swerts too thinks Feyenoord had opportunities to put down a better result. ‘After their second goal things were equal and Ajax wasn’t really dangerous anymore. So it’s a pity that we had to concede those goals so early, but our performance gives us hope for the future. We are playing better and better with this young team.’ The Belgian was reasonably pleased with his own performance. His direct opponent was hardly in the game. ‘But once unfortunately he was. I moved inside a little too much, which allowed Mitea to cross. Van der Vaart finished it off very nicely. He’ll not do that again. And after that I experienced few problems. It was in any event really great to play this game. The championship will be difficult; Ajax is now the big favourite.’
