A 3-1 win in Volendam Sunday thanks to goals from Kuyt, Van Persie and Kuyt again managed to restore to pride to Feyenoord after a week of dismal fortunes. The three Eredivisie points are welcome to coach Van Marwijk, but not the torn knee ligaments suffered by Leonardo in the first half, which meant a hospital visit for the Brazilian and no doubt a long layoff, so soon after returning from injury.

There was a surprise in goal for the Rotterdammers, where Patrick Lodewijks replaced Edwin Zoetebier. ‘Edwin isn’t radiating the confidence the team needs lately,’ the coach opined. Zoetebier was clearly disappointed to miss the return to his home town, but Van Marwijk confirmed, ‘I cannot allow myself to be swayed by emotion in this type of case.’ Feyenoord started enthusiastically and were rewarded with a goal within three minutes. Lurling slalomed through the home defence and when he was brought to the ground inside the area, referee Jol pointed to the spot. Kuyt converted the penalty. The goal really injected some life into the game. The high tempo made for an attractive encounter full of attacking. Feyenoord had most of the ball, but Volendam made the best chances. And finished one of them in the seventh minute, when Ouhsaine rounded off a fine home move to equalise, despite the close attentions of Van den Berg and Paauwe. The opportunities kept on coming. Faria sent a drive just wide, Leonardo was a tore away from converting a Kuyt cross and then Lurling shot over from close by, while Buffel was forced to clear a Fraia effort off the line Leonardo caused the home defence a number of problems. In the fortieth minute the Brazilian turned past his marker and headed for goal, only to turn on his knee awkwardly. The diagnosis was made soon after the Brazilian was carried off on a stretcher: torn knee ligaments. In the second half Feyenoord found it tough to regain their momentum. Lazovic replaced Leonardo and that menat that things were less fluent than in the first half. That said, the visitors did continue to create chances, though the reward was a long time coming. The goal didn’t come until after the second substitution. Van Persie was on for just a few minutes for Buffel when he gave the Rotterdammers the lead, converting a lpass form the left. And not much later Van Persie was in the thick of things again, floating in a free lick that found the head of Kuyt, who extended the lead with four minutes left on the clock.
