A shocking second half turnaround left Feyenoord licking their wounds, as FC Groningen reined in a three-goal deficit to grab at 3-3 draw at Oosterpark Stadium Sunday. An early Lurling goal was added to by Kuyt and Paauwe before the break, yet Feyenoord were unable to hold the line in the second half, which culminated in a late equaliser helped by ex-Feyenoorder Brian Pinas to secure a share of the spoils for the home side.

Feyenoord-FC Groningen was only five minutes in when Anthony Lurling added to his recent tally of goals to hand the Rotterdammers the lead. The only goal spurred on the visitors as FC Groningen took time to recover from the early blow. Feyenoord were comfortable for the whole of the first half and looked solid at the back, not least due to some fine defensive work in midfield. The second Rotterdam goal looked a cert just past the half hour, when Acuña forced Vrede into an ill-advised back pass and Kuyt nipped in to intercept, rounding the keeper, but only finding the side netting with his effort. Kuyt made up for things within two minutes however. When he was released by Paauwe. Vrede couldn’t keep up with Kuyt, and the Katwij -born striker finished with a powerful drive that doubled the Feyenoord lead. Feyenoord continued to create chances, as the home side continued to limp through the half. 35 in and Kuyt was released again, this time by Buffel and when the ball fell to Lurling it looked like game over, but Lurling waited too long and Elshot was able to prevent a third goal. But in injury time, the Rotterdammers did finally get goal number three. A fine pass by Schreuder found Paauwe’s head at the far post and Feyenoord wandered in at the break with what looked like an unassailable lead. And yet within eight minutes of the restart, Feyenoord gave the home side a glimmer of hope, when Drent looped a header over Song and Zoetebier for 1-3. Feyenoord then appeared to regain their grip on the match and looked capable of playing down the clock, yet even that was asking too much of the visitors. With fifteen left on the clock, Hugo exploited some sloppy play in the Feyenoord defence to put FC Groningen within striking distance. And the circle was rounded just before the end, when a speculative effort by ex-Feyenoord player Brian Pinas deflected off Van Gessel to leave Zoetebier clutching air as the ball sailed into the net for a most unlikely equaliser that left Feyenoord shaking their heads and, more importantly, with two less points than expected.
