Feyenoord travel to Groningen for the latest Eredivisie challenge Sunday when the two teams meet at the Oosterpark stadium. The Rotterdammers will definitely be without Gérard de Nooijer and Kees van Wonderen, while Ferne Snoyl and Hossam Ghaly are both doubtful and indeed unlikely to play any part. ‘It’s not ideal, but I don’t have any other solution,’ admitted coach Bert van Marwijk. ‘I may add a reserve player to the squad, because I’m missing defenders.’

Left back is the big talking point, with Gérard de Nooijer out of the reckoning and Ramon van Haaren still a week away from any return to the squad. The club’s only other recognised left back, Ferne Snoyl, limped out of training Friday with a muscle strain and is ‘a very big doubt,’ in Van Marwijk’s own words. Snoyl’s absence will force the coach to choose between Christian Gyan and Chong-Gug Song. ‘Both players have played there before, Song a little longer than Gyan. Song still hasn’t attained the level I expect of him. He has to keep it simple. And Gyan has been out for a long time.’ Personnel problems are mounting due to a flu bug. De Nooijer had a bout a couple of weeks ago and last week it was Paauwe’s turn. It also kept Dirk Kuyt out of training Friday. ‘I have to keep in mind that more players may report sick Saturday or Sunday,’ admitted the coach. Apart from defence, the starting line-up is unlikely to differ from the one that took on Willem II, with Jorge ‘Kike’ Acuña continuing to deputise for Van Wonderen in midfield. There is some speculation when it comes to the left wing however. Robin van Persie has enjoyed the coach’s confidence for quite a while, but after a week training on his own due to an ankle injury, the youngster lost his place to Anthony Lurling against Willem II, who repaid Van Marwijk with a goal. ‘I’ve made my choice, but I’m keeping it to myself,’ said the boss Friday. ‘I’ll say who’s playing on Sunday.’ Sunday 2 November 2003 Holland Casino Eredivisie FC Groningen – Feyenoord Venue: Oosterpark Kick-off: 2.30 pm Referee: Braamhaar Feyenoord (probable) Zoetebier; Swerts, Van den Berg, Paauwe, Song (Gyan); Acuña, Ono, Schreuder, Lurling (Van Persie); Kuyt, Buffel.
