The only person missing from Sunday’s squad is Kees van Wonderen, who is recovering from a hamstring injury. His stand-in is Jorge ‘Kike’ Acuña. Robin van Persie is back in the squad, but the young striker has been suffering from a painful ankle this week and trained on his own Friday, so he’s unlikely to start. That paves the way for Anthony Lurling to get his first start this season. Vasn Marwijk was giving nothing away on that one though: ‘I still have to think about it,’ admitted the coach.
With Korean Chong-Gug Song still below par, Gill Swerts definitely plays. The Belgian Under 21 international has done well since making his debut against FC Zwolle. ‘He has good characteristics for a right back,’ explained Van Marwijk, ‘ although he sometimes man-marks like a midfielder. He is sometimes too near the middle and too far from his man. Those are errors he can quickly learn to correct. He often goes forwards well when we have the ball, so I’m very satisfied with him.’
Van Marwijk also expressed his satisfaction with Ferne Snoyl. That said, the left back cannot be sure of his place. After a bout of flu, Gérard de Nooijer is likely to get the nod Sunday. ‘Snoyl is doing well just like Swerts,’ said the coach. ‘They are solid. I cannot expect those boys to start being creative. To do that they need a longer run in the team and time to mature into their role. But time is something you often don’t have at a top club.’
