Feyenoord were pushed back in the opening minutes, but managed to keep their goal intact and then struck themselves with their first attack. Kuyt did well on the left to skin his direct opponent before laying the ball off to Buffel in space, who rammed the ball into the net for the opening goal of the game.
The early goal allowed Feyenoord to take the fizz out of the game and Austrian enthusiasm was soon on the wane. The 1300 away fans might have expected Feyenoord to double the lead, but the Rotterdammers were unable to cash in with FC Kärnten on the ropes. First Ono saw his deflected shot pushed out by Gorriup, then Buffel was also foiled by the Austrian keeper.
A Bubalo header was cleared off the line by Van Persie, but the first half’s best chance also fell to Buffel, who was set off by Ono. The Belgian kept his nerve in the box, but his drive went just past the post.
Feyenoord started the second period unchanged and it soon became clear that the Rotterdammers wanted to maintain the status quo on the scoreboard too But sloppy play let in the Austrians on more than one occasion as Zoetebier’s goal came under fire. The Feyenoord keeper saved a Höller effort and Schellander tried his luck with a couple of free kicks, while Hota also went close, but his shot was pulled wide.
Bert van Marwijk brought in Lurling for Van Persie with fifteen to play and he made the only serious chance after the break, breaking past two men before drilling in a shot that keeper Gorriup managed to keep out.
Just before the end Hossam Ghaly came on for Ono, but the Egyptian had little time to affect things as Feyenoord ran out winners.
