The coach will probably be able to call on Gérard de Nooijer, after the defender trained again these past two days. ‘He had a slight reaction after Friday training. I hope I can play him, although it’s wait and see.’ The stakes are high, as both Patrick Paauwe and Alfred Schreuder are suspended for the match.
Van Marwijk is looking to disrupt his formation as little as possible. ‘That appears the most sensible thing to do, because we need calm. I could put Kees van Wonderen back in defence, but without Kees and Alfred I’d have a totally new midfield. That isn’t good for calm.’
The coach admitted that De Nooijer in the centre and Snoyl at left back is an option. ‘Snoyl is making his mark more and more. He played well against Kärnten. I have to compliment him on that, because it’s not easy to make your debut in a team out of form. That’s also the reason I picked him. He has played for Feyenoord youths for years and he’s used to the pressure to perform well.’
That doesn’t go for some of his squad-mates, says Van Marwijk. ‘You can see that a guy like Kuyt can handle the pressure. He doesn’t take any notice of what’s being written and read. Some guys find things tougher. Song for example. He comes from a completely different football culture. When you’re 5-0 down there the crowd will still applaud a good back pass. Not so here. I spoke with him about it and he admitted he found it difficult. Players like Van den Berg and Schreuder also notice the difference with their former clubs. They were far more anonymous there, the pressure is a lot hotter here.’
It’s all about confidence of course, and there’s a time for saying and a time for playing. With FC Zwolle manageress, bottom of the table and with one point from five games, Feyenoord will never have a better opportunity to charge up on self-belief.
