LATEST BUFFEL AUTOGRAPH BRINGS SMILES ALL ROUND

As Open Day got underway, Thomas Buffel placed his signature under a new contract Wednesday afternoon that will keep the Belgian international at Feyenoord until the summer of 2007. Buffel was delighted to reaffirm his commitment to the Kuip cause. ‘This is my sixth year in Rotterdam and I am very much at home here. I’m only 22 and I have a lot more to learn. I can do that at Feyenoord.’

The rumour mill has linked Buffel with a swathe of foreign clubs after a fine debut season in the first team. The player himself hasn’t given a second thought to a switch though. ‘When my contract ends I’ll only be 25. I have my whole career in front of me. I’m patient. I am happy at Feyenoord. And this year I have to prove that my performances last year weren’t accidental.’ The exit of the a number of experienced players like Kalou, Emerton, Van Hooijdonk and Bosvelt is no reason to face the future with anything but optimism. ‘We’ll obviously miss them, but it is perhaps good for the younger players that we have to make our marks. We’ll see how things pan out.’ Buffel is hoping that the squad will get a boost or two before the season swings into action. ‘Good players have come in, but there is room for more. I have heard the names Schreuder and Landzaat and personally I think they are good players. Their experience would come in handy.’
