Confirmation has come that Pierre van Hooijdonk is to swap Rotterdam for Istanbul. The striker is soon to jet out to the Turkish capital to put his name to a two-year contract that will make him a Fenerbahçe player, bringing to an end Van Hooijdonk’s two-season stint at the Kuip. Although in the air for quite some time, the deal was fast-tracked Friday with the arrival in the Netherlands of a heavyweight Turkish delegation.

The Istanbul outfit’s German coach Christophe Daum, chairman Aziz Yildirim and technical director Volkan Ballý all flew west to try to convince the big man and his agent Rob Jansen. Pierre van Hooijdonk arrived in Rotterdam in the summer of 2001 in Rotterdam, carving his name in the Feyenoord history books with goals and lots of them, including a brace in the 2002 UEFA Cup final to help the Rotterdammers to the trophy.
