EBI CLOSE TO COMING IN FROM THE COLD

After over a year on the sidelines Ebi Smolarek’s return to full training is getting nearer by the day. Indeed, the Polish international is now participating in almost everything his squadmates are asked to do. ‘I’m only skipping the games. I think it’ll be another two weeks before I can join in those,’ explains Feyenoord’s very own heartthrob. ‘I’m doing well. I am totally satisfied with how the past week has gone.’

‘The first day of training was fun. There were so many people and it took some getting used to after so much time out of the frame at the National Sport Centre, where the only onlookers were the squirrels. But there were lots of fans Monday and Dirk Kuyt was there too. I have spoken to him before. Dirk is a nice guy. ‘I have set myself a goal and that is to keep fit and play as many games as I can. The details don’t concern me. Whether it’s in the reserves or in first-team friendlies. Obviously I cannot just claim an immediate place in the first team. And I don’t have a problem with that. But I am happy that I am able to join the rest of the lads for preseason. Everyone is starting afresh and it’s easier to get up to speed.’
