ONO GIVEN EXTRA RESPITE

Shinji Ono will not hook up with his mates when the Feyenoord first team squad gathers for first day of training Monday 7 July. The Japanese international has been given an extended holiday by coach Van Marwijk and is expected back at the Kuip no earlier than 11 July. Ono has worked almost non stop for two years. The player will be back in the fold in time for the preseason training camp in Austria.

Due to injury the midfielder was not selected for Japan’s Confederations Cup campaign or the warm-up friendlies leading up to it. The Asian Footballer of the Year flagged up his fatigue all last season and had precious little time to recover from a variety of injuries. That’s why coach Van Marwijk has now prioritised the Japanese star’s return to fighting fit ahead of the 2003-4 campaign.
