After a slow start, the opening strike came out of the blue sky. Paul Bosvelt headed onto Kalou, who moved forward two paces before launching a drive that beat keeper Kujovic to his left. That was on 26, and five minutes later it should have been two, but Van Persie’s free kick went just past the post.
Then a foul on Song resulted in another free kick to the right of the penalty area. Van Persie’s shot had enough power to flummox Filipovic, who guided the ball past his own keeper to double the home side’s advantage.
Roda JC must have been given a rollicking at the break, because the Kerkrade outfit did more in the first 300 seconds of the second half, than they did in the whole 45 minutes of the first. And the reward was not long coming, Cristiano finding himself in space at a corner and netting with his head to make it 2-1.
The renewed attacking vigour of the visitors gave Feyennord more space up front too, however, especially on the right. Even so, Roda JC continued to threaten an equaliser, Anastasiou went close for one.
Van Marwijk decided to beef things up by introducing Van Hooijdonk and the Big Man’s presence almost paid off when Lurling was presented with a huge chance, but his lob hit the topside of the bar.
With the game tightly balanced, Soetaers should have levelled things, but managed to squander an open-goal chance that few would have turned their noses up at.
The game and the Eredivise season was finally put to bed and given a good night kiss when Thomas Buffel grabbed his eighteenth goal of a fantastic season to make it 3-1.
