VAN MARWIJK IN NO NEED OF GERMAN SWITCH

Club newspaper Feyenoordkrant reveals that Bundesliga club Schalke ’04 have approached Bert van Marwijk to replace successful Dutch coach Huub Stevens. The club invited Van Marwijk for preliminary discussions, and when the Feyenoord coach informed his club of the German interest, he was told that a premature departure is ‘not open to discussion.’ ‘No problem, because I still feel very much at home in Rotterdam,’ says Van Marwijk himself.

After the good times in Gelsenkirchen during Huub Stevens’s reign, Schalke ’04 has failed to maintain their forwards momentum and sacked new coach Frank half way through his first season. With Belgian player Marc Wilmots taking over coaching responsibilities on a temporary basis, the Germans decided it was time to contact Van Marwijk, who the club had tried to lure eastwards immediately after Feyenoord’s UEFA Cup victory against Borussia Dortmund. The Rotterdammers couldn’t be clearer about Van Marwijk’s tenure at the Kuip however. ‘His contract wasn’t extended for nothing,’ explained manager Jan D. Swart. ‘Van Marwijk is a coach who suits this club well. If you look at the history books, it doesn’t happen so very often that a coach begins his fourth year at the club. Even the legendary Ernst Happel didn’t manage that.’
