Feyenoord had another difficult day at the office Sunday, before overcoming RKC by 2-1 in a sundrenched Kuip. Goals came from Kalou and Van Hooijdonk, but man of the match was Patrick Loodewijks, who saved the home side repeatedly. The win keeps the Rotterdammers in the race for second place, although the bad news from Nijmegen was that Ajax came from a goal behind to snatch a 2-1 victory of their own.

Feyenoord started with Christian Gyan in central defence and the switch seemed to upset the home team in the first few moments as RKC created three chances in the first five minutes. Feyenoord had their chance too however and should have opened the scoring when Van Persie, Ono, Van Hooijdonk and Kalou all had chances to bury the ball in the back of the net from around the six-yard line, but the ball bounced off the bar and off keeper Van Dijk before bouncing clear. Heartbreakingly for the Rotterdammers, RKC then rushed to the other end and scored themselves. Patrick Lodewijks was unable to hold onto a Cornelisse shot and Van Diemen nipped in to tuck the ball away from close range.. Feyenoord kept their minds on the task ahead however and Buffel might have balanced things up, but just failed to contact with a Kalou cross as the ball whistled across the goal. Not long after Bosvelt rattled one against the post. It was not until ten minutes before the break that Feyenoord threatened again, Van Persie picking the ball up on the edge of the box before launching one towards goal, but the ball went over. Three minutes later the visitor’s defence was finally breached. Bosvelt played the ball in erfectly for Kalou who could little elsse but nod the ball into the back of the net. The home came out for the second half unchanged and continues to have most of the ball, but save a few half chances neither keeper was really threatened. Coach Van Marwijk decided it was time to mix it up a little, throwing on Lurling for Robin van Persie, and Feyenoord’s forward play did pick up somewhat. It was left to Patrick Lodewijks to keep his team in contention however, as he made save after save as the home side seemed to fall asleep at the bac. Pierre van Hooijdonk had a great chance to hand Feyenoord the lead. When he smashed in a freekick from an impossible position on the left, but the ball shaved the underside of the bar and out to safety. But the goal final came from the goalgetter extraordinaire, and it was another freekick. In the top right corner of Van Dijk’s net that handed Feyenoord the three points.
