Gérard de Nooijer has claimed a regular position in the middle of defence since his move to the Kuip. His success is founded on mental strength and tenacity, but a pulled hamstring at Utrecht has stopped De Nooijer in his tracks and the player trained only once this past week, so he’s unlikely to start.
Eternal substitute Glenn Loovens is also running half-cocked, with a groin strain that saw him limp out of Saturday training early. The focus now switches to the medical staff whose job it is to patch up De Nooijer or Loovens on time. Hopes are not high.
That means Bert van Marwijk will have to cut his cloth accordingly at the back, where Patrick Paauwe will most likely move up a rung to central defence. The recent win against Vitesse showed that Tomasz Rzasa is still a reliable option at leftback in his stead. Alternatively, the coach may opt to partner Kees van Wonderen with Christian Gyan in the middle or even try the Ghanaian or Korean Chong-Gug Song at leftback.
