PIERRE FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR?

Pierre van Hooijdonk is once again up for the Footballer of the Year award, after players’ union VVCS and coaches’ association CBV announced its nominations for the 2002-2003 season. The Feyenoorder is looking to extend his hegemony after scooping the honour last campaign. Pierre’s rivals for the award include PSV’s Mateja Kezman and Feyenoord-bound FC Utrecht striker Dirk Kuijt. The winner is announced 1 June, the day Feyenoord and Utrecht meet in the cup final.

Feyenoord is also in the running for Club of the Year, where it faces stiff competition from CL quarterfinalists Ajax and runaway league leaders PSV. The Rotterdammers swept up in last year’s prizes as Van Hooijdonk (Best Player), Edwin Zoetebier (Best Goalkeeper), Bert van Marwijk (Best Coach), Thomas Buffel (Best First Division Player) and Robin van Persie (Best Young Player) all won personal awards, while Feyenoord bagged the Club of the Year honour to boot.
