Two goals in the opening fourteen minutes from Buffel and Van Hooijdonk meant that Feyenoord jogged to another three points in Zwolle Sunday afternoon, four days after the scintillating midweek cup win against Ajax, despite never really firing on all cylinders. The big score never materialised and the Rotterdammers were even pegged back to one-two early in the second half before goal-king Van Hooijdonk snatched his second of the afternoon later on to secure the points.

With Met Acuña in for Ono Feyenoord were given free reign early on and Thomas Buffel opened the scoring on six minutes. Van Persie’s pass was played into Buffel by van Hooijdonk and the little Beelgian steamed through the heart of the home defence sidestepping Roelofsen and scooping the ball over the oncoming Van der Werff and into the net. The knife therough butter scenario was repeated when Van Persie countered after a Zwolle corner, launching a lob from the half way line that cracked against the post. And within minutes Feyenoord were two up, when Van Hooijdonk was gifted the ball in front of goal, beating keeper Van der Werff with his usual panache to score. Feyenoord looked set for a big score but suddenly lost their way after those very productive first fourteen. The home side were allowed to get back into the game as nonchalance threatened to derail the Rotterdam train. As the first period unravelled it was Zwolle who had most possession and the better chances to boot, the biggest for Promes, who pounced on a mistake by De Nooijer to power in an effort that whistled just wide. The home side’s enthusiasm was rewarded early in the second half when Bosschaart netted on 49, skinning Paauwe before firing in an unstoppable drive that had Lodewijks well beaten. The goal shook the visitors, and Van Marwijk brought on Lurling for the disappointing Kalou almost immediately. Lurling’s entrance could do little to prevent the game’s next best chance falling to Zwolle. Cvetkov caterpillared his way past Emerton and Van Wonderen and his effort was finally ultimately kept out by the Paauwe on the goal line. Feyenoord was next to take an early shower, top be replace by Song. Feynoord pressed forward and might have extended their lead with ten minutes to go when Bosvelt rasped in a drive that Doesburg cleared from the line. But the cup finalists finally secured the points in the last minute when Pierre van Hooijdonk netted his 25th goal of the season.
