REF DECIDES REST IS BEST

Roelof Luinge, the referee who inexplicably sent off Pierre van Hooijdonk in Wednesday’s cup triumph against Ajax, has announced he’s to take a holiday, reports ANP. Luinge also missed a vicious elbows-first attack on Gérard de Nooijer by Zlatan Ibrahimovic that left the Feyenoorder needing prolonged treatment to a cut above the eye, and the uppercut that Christain Chivu doled out to Chong-Gug Song as the game reached boiling point.

In a similar incident, Luinge redcarded PSV striker Mateja Kežman two weeks ago, only for the decision to be overturned later. Dutch football’s governing body KNVB are said not to have driven Luinge’s decision to take a break. Feyenoord is confident that Pierre van Hooijdonk’s red card will rescinded too.
