Feyenoord took all three points in the final minutes of injury time to leapfrog into second place in the Eredivisie until Sunday afternoon after a 2-1 home win over Vitesse. If Feyenoord failed to impress, it was all the visitors deserved, after wasting time throughout the game. Van Persie had opened the scoring, only for Peeters to level soon after, in a game in which Feyenoord clearly missed Buffel, Van Wonderen and De Nooijer.

Van Persie it was who got the opening goal on eighteen. Brett Emerton sent over a fine cross that the youngster got to ahead of the goalie to head the ball into the goal. The goal was unexpected really, as neither side looked too threatening in the opening stages of the game. A shot by Bosvelt hwas all the Rotterdammers had to show for the opening fifteen minutes. The pace was slow and it seemed to send the home side to sleep after all the effort of scoring. Indeed, within a few minutes Vitesse were level, Peeters creeping in behind Paauwe to lob the ball over Lodewijks. The equaliser didn’t wake the home side up however and the crowd started to get restless as the break approached. A freekick from Van Hooijdonk ended in the wall and that was all the excitement the Legion were going to get before halftime. Sebastian Pardo didn’t come out for the second half. The Chilean had a dramatic first half in front of his onlooking parents and Lurling took his place. With twenty-minutes on the clock Van Marwijk threw on Bombarda for Kalou, to see if the Argentine could make the difference, and the sub did have a great chance as the game reached its climax, scorching in a piledriver from just outside the box that keeper Jevric fingertipped over. It looked like the visitors had successfully run down the clock with spoiling and delaying tactics, and even when the fourth official signalled four minutes overtime, few thought that Feyenoord could get the winner. But with seconds to go, Anthony Lurling, on for Robin van Persie, pounced on a hopeful punt by Loovens, controlling the ball, before turning and shooting in one to send the ball into the back of the net to pull an extra two points out of the fire for Feyenoord.
