Feyenoord fired off a five-goal salvo in Rotterdam Saturday against Heerenveen that will have reached the ears of interested parties in Amsterdam too. Pierre van Hooijdonk hit a hat-trick, while Thomas Buffel, and Robin van Persie scored the other goals in front of 46,000 fans to put the Rotterdammers within two points of second-placed Ajax...

Heerenveen started promisingly, but the home side took the lead with its first attack of the evening. Bonaventure Kalou played a custom-made pass to Buffel who tapped the ball past keeper Vonk for the opener. Within two minutes the visitors might have levelled things, but John de Jong’s rasping drive was fingertipped onto the post by Lodewijks. The early lead gave Feyenoord confidence and the Rotterdammers were playing the ball around at high speed. The big chances were not forthcoming however, although at the other end Heerenveen came within a whisker when Sibon headed into the side netting. Heading into the break, Feyenoord were close to making it two-nil, but Pierre van Hooijdonk’s freekick and Robin van Persie’s drive both failed to find the net. The second half started like the first, with the visitors looking to attack, but the home side stamped their authority on the game with a quick strike. This time it was Ono who sprayed the ball out to the left, where Buffel received and moved towards the danger area before finding Van Persie with an inch perfect pass that the youth international slotted into the net. Less than ten minutes later and the game was up for the Frisians as Pierre van Hooijdonk floated in a trademark freekick to make it three. And three minutes after that Thomas Buffel sailed through the offside trap to set up Van Hooijdonk for the fourth. Poor Heerenveen were really struggling to get back on their feet as Feyenoord launched wave after wave of attack. It was Thomas Buffel anew who was the foundation stone for the next strike, as the Belgian stormed towards the Heerenveen goal, but was hauled down by a defender and referee Jol had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Up stepped Van Hooijdonk to rifle in his third of the evening. That was the end of the scoring, but Feyenoord can look back on a successful mission.
