With 19 points from a possible 21 since the winter break, Feyenoord are picking up speed in the race for end-of-season honours. Next fixture on the list is Saturday’s home game against Heerenveen and coach Van Marwijk is looking forward to a seventh successive win in all competitions. ‘It’s important we keep on winning. Things may be clearer after this weekend,’ said the coach, alluding to Sunday’s PSV-Ajax clash.

Unbeaten in 2003 and top of the goalscoring charts, Feyenoord couldn’t have wished for a better start to the year. The run continued in last week’s win at a vastly improved NEC, although the Rotterdammers didn’t have it all their own way. Van Marwijk was happy to see the character of his team come to the fore. ‘I was very satisfied with the performance. In spite of a poor pitch we showed some good touches and, more importantly, we showed mental discipline when things weren’t going for us. We had an unfounded penalty given against us, we had a good goal ruled out and Paul Bosvelt came under attack. In all those cases you can do one of two things. You can get hugely irritated or you can thumb your nose at it and go on to win the game. We did the latter, against an opponent for which there was a great deal at stake. They had to win to stay in the race for the European places. But in spite of everything we got the points and that has given this team an extra dose of confidence.’ The coach is very keen to retain the positive feel within the club right now and wasn’t amused by a report in a regional paper during the week that Edwin Zoetebier had to regain his place in the team if the mood wasn’t going to degenerate in the squad. ‘You won’t succeed in sowing discontent,’ Van Marwijk snapped at the writer of the piece. ‘There is no fudge whatsoever in the squad or among the keepers about the current situation. You would have known that if you’d just asked the keepers or me. There is no need for any discussion. I don’t think it’s any more than logical and healthy that Edwin wants to play. It would be crazy if he were satisfied with a place on the bench. I have explained my thoughts to both keepers. We’ll see which one of them is in goal come Saturday.’ HOLLAND CASINO EREDIVISE Saturday 22 March 2003 FEYENOORD-SC HEERENVEEN Venue: Kuip Kickoff: 7.30pm Probable teams FEYENOORD Lodewijks – Emerton, Van Wonderen, De Nooijer, Paauwe – Kalou, Bosvelt, Ono, Van Persie – Buffel, Van Hooijdonk SC HEERENVEEN Vonk – Bakkati, Hansma, Hansson, Edman – Radomski, De Jong, Jensen (Selakovic), Nurmela – Sibon, Denneboom.
