The start was as much as coach van Marwijk and the 20,000 plus loyal fans in the Kuip could have wished for as Feyenoord raced out of the blocks to grab the lead within three minutes. Kalou received a pass from his big friend Chris Gyan about twenty metres out, before slaloming into the box, rounding keeper Jevric and slotting home.
Kalou could have given his side some breathing space on thirteen minutes, but the Ivorian international was unable to repeat the trick and Jevric saved.
From that moment Feyenoord seemed to run out of steam and Vitesse came into the contest. The equaliser was of simple manufacture. Janssen extended a corner with his head and the tall Peeters found himself with all the time in the world and a lot of space to boot to nod over the line and rub out Feyenoord’s lead.
Van Marwijk’s halftime response was to sacrifice De Nooijer. Gyan moved into the centre of defence and Song took up his favourite rightback position. The switch took fifteen minutes to pay dividends. First Feyenoord had to undergo an ordeal by fire as Lodelwijks denied Peeters when the Belgian should have scored. Then Song steamed down the right before crossing from the deadball line to find Van Persie who converted for 2-1.
The youngster Van Persie doubled his tally five minutes down the clock to end the game as a contest with a crisp drive from the edge of the penalty area.
The two-goal cushion gave Van Marwijk the opportunity to swap Bosvelt for Acuña.
Van Persie almost completely his hattrick with ten minutes to go, but Luinge ruled the goal out for handball. Additional chances for Van Hooijdonk, Van Persie and Buffel couldn’t add to the total either and despite a late appearance by Pardo (for Kalou) the game ended 3-1.
