’My whole life I’ve resolved to grab every opportunity that comes my way with both hands. Here at Feyenoord I’ve been successful up to now. But I am enormously grateful to the club and the coach for giving me this chance. Certainly Mr Van Marwijk, who probably didn’t know me, but who accepted me and gave me the opportunity to show what I could do during the winter break. I now feel that I owe him something. I can only repay him for what he’s done for me with good performances. He can be sure that I’ll give 100% every training session and every game.
’When I went home at the end of my trial I took a Feyenoord shirt with me. I didn’t know whether I’d be back, but that beautiful red and white shirt meant a great deal to me. I dreamt of playing, not in a practice match but in a real game. When I was given my own Feyenoord shirt with my name on the back last weekend against AZ it was a massive moment for me. And when I heard the supporters chanting my name I got goose bumps. I’d never had that in Chile, it’s rare to chant one player’s name. But I felt it was symbolic of how I’ve been received here. Everyone is immensely warm and the supporters are also making me feel at home. That’s important for a footballer.
’I want you to know that I will do everything in my power to repay your confidence in me. My aim is now to win trophies with this club and to become a first team regular as soon as possible. Whatever happens, I’ll never give up, I’ll always fight for Feyenoord and I’ll never end a game with a dry shirt.’
