NO-ONE’S DOUBTING THOMAS IN BELGIUM

Feyenoord striker Thomas Buffel appears to have captured the hearts of his country after a fine display for the Red Devils in a 3-0 win over Algeria. There was no waffle from the Belgian press, who were unanimous about the value of the diminutive striker’s performance. French and Flemish language publications alike gushed about the player, who was flagged up by Enzo Scifo last year. La Dernière Heure newspaper called Buffel ‘the game’s main attraction.’

Elsewhere Het Laatste Nieuws mused: ‘Thomas Buffel’s debut in the centre was a direct hit. The Feyenoorder earned his third cap as though he had been an international for years.’ De Gazet van Antwerpen also praised the youngster who ‘was given a free role and was very impressive. Always goal-oriented, and even in the mud he seldom or never gave a bad pass.’
