FIRST DAY AT THE OFFICE FOR ACUÑA

Kike Acuña joined training for the first time Thursday as an official Feyenoord player. The Chilean flew into Holland Wednesday afternoon, relieved to have sorted out the red tape. ‘I was tired of waiting and was almost becoming despondent. But I’m here now and I can play for Feyenoord.’

The long journey and the stress of weeks of waiting for the paperwork to come through were evident, but Acuña trained Thursday as though he’d never been away. ‘I’m fit. I trained with my old club Universidad Católica in Chile, mainly with the reserves so I expect I’ll need a couple of days to get into the rhythm. I could play this weekend, though I expect to be on the bench. That’s fine. Hopefully I can get on for a few minutes against AZ.’ After training Acuña made a beeline for the main Kuip playing surface. ‘I haven’t walked on the pitch yet, because I was afraid it would bring me bad luck when everything still had to be confirmed. But I can hardly wait now.’
