VAN MARWIJK FINALLY GETS TO ROTATE HIS SQUAD

Wednesday’s Amstel Cup encounter with amateur side AGOVV looks like giving Bert van Marwijk a great chance to field some squad players who have failed to feature too much in this Eredivisie campaign, ahead of the weekend’s Dutch treat in Amsterdam against Champions Ajax. Because even without some of its star performers Van Marwijk’s team must be odds-on favourite to shoot down the Apeldoorn outfit and progress to the next round of the competition.

The coach may be loath to say so in public, but he’ll surely be thinking that the cat is in the bag as long as his side don’t do anything silly. And indeed, Tuesday’s sleet-ridden training session seemed to give a few leads on just which eleven will start. If internationals like Van Hooijdonk, Bosvelt, Pardo, Emerton and Buffel are among them it will be a surprise. That goes for veterans like De Nooijer too, who look likely to sit out the game out, conserving their energy for more pressing matters in the capital at the weekend. If Van Marwijk persuades the zealous captain fantastic Paul Bosvelt to put his feet up, Kees van Wonderen will likely move up a square to midfield, with Patrick Paauwe and Glenn Loovens teaming up in the centre of defence, and Tomasz Rzasa coming in at leftback.
