ROBIN VAN PERSIE PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT

Robin van Persie picked up his first two senior goals for Feyenoord on Gran Canaria, earning himself the Player of the Tournament accolade in the process, as chosen by the attending international press. The young striker was awarded a trophy, which sits nicely alongside the compliment Van Persie received from his coach. ‘I’ve seen another Robin this week,’ Van Marwijk said. ‘I hope that he can continue in this manner.’

Van Persie netted his first senior goal for Feyenoord in Tuesday’s game against Sturm Graz. ‘Finally I got it. It may be a friendly tournament, but that goal was a massive relief for me,’ the Rotterdam-born attacker admitted. Two days later and the tally was doubled with the first goal against Nürnberg. In fact, Van Persie should have had another seconds later, failing to find the net from a few yards out. ‘I gave Robin an extra compliment. Both for his game and for his first goal. For me the fact he scored again today confirms what I’d already seen, which is that Robin is on the right track. I hope he continues in this way. And especially those moments things aren’t going well,’ Bert van Marwijk said. The coach was also very pleased with Bonaventure Kalou. ‘Without wanting to take anything away from Robin’s performance, for me Bona was the best player in the tournament. Kalou in this form is a pleasure to watch. At that moment I don’t think there’s anyone better.’
