The afternoon got underway in spectacular fashion. Ono made the most of the home side’s first attack to sweep home the opener with his right foot and within seventeen minutes it was two, as Pierre van Hooijdonk slotted home an Emerton cross from the right.
Feyenoord were too hot for AZ in an all-new formation. Kalou had a fine game after a less successful run and Pardo too looked to be grabbing his chance with both hands. Indeed the Chilean was rewarded for his commitment before the end of the half when he converted a Van Hooijdonk cross to leave Moens chanceless and drive up his side’s lead to 3-0 from around twenty metres.
The second half started with Feyenoord continuing to push forward looking for goals. And the fourth of the afternoon came just after the hour, when Van Hooijdonk converted a trademark freekick to break AZ hearts.
New signing Gerard de Nooijer was brought on with ten minutes left in place Loovens. By then Perez had got a goal back for the visitors. A little later Lurling came on for Buffel, which the crowd didn’t appear to appreciate, welcoming the substitute with a chorus of whistles.
Within seconds the jeers had turned to cheers however, as Ono swept in Feyenoord’s fifth, under the watchful eye of national coach Zico. And the home side completed the half dozen in the last minute when Bombarda, just on for Van Hooijdonk, scored to send the crowd home with an early Xmas present.
