Training Zoetebier and Lodewijks

Edwin Zoetebier and Patrick Lodewijks have passed the first hurdle on the way to fitness ahead of Sunday’s home game with AZ. The two keepers were given a hard runout by trainer Pim Doesburg. ‘It’s now about waiting to see how the body reacts,’ Edwin Zoetebier explained. ‘We’ll know more about that tomorrow. It’ll be a race against the clock to get fit enough for Sunday, but the first step has already been taken.’

Both Zoetebier (hamstrings) and Lodewijks (five bruised ribs) underwent their respective assessments with painkillers. ‘We need them,’ Zoetebier continued, ‘because neither of us have fully recovered. But we were able to do almost everything today. I saw Patrick diving as usual despite the pain and in spite of my knee problems I was able to kick the ball. Those are good signs.’ ‘Much depends on the body’s reaction tomorrow. If the reaction is okay, we’ll be ready for the next step. We can then cautiously join training.’ Any decision about the keepers’ inclusion in the weekend’s squad will come at the last possible moment. ‘After Saturday’s training we’ll know more about that,’ Edwin Zoetebier said.
