It looked for a long time like a draw in the Kuip Sunday afternoon when Feyenoord met FC Utrecht in the driving rain, but a Paul Bosvelt effort in the final minute of regular time broke the deadlock and made sure that the visitors left Rotterdam with nothing. Earlier Brett Emerton had given the home side a first-half lead, only for the sellout crowd to see Utrecht level late in the second half.

As well as the three points, the reappearance of Pierre Van Hooijdonk with fifteen minutes to play brought the biggest cheer of the afternoon. Feyenoord started with Chris Gyan on the right and Song on he left in defence, with Mariano Bombarda continuing in attack, alongside Thomas Buffel. And it was the Argentinian who had the home side’s first chance of the game after four minutes. He turned clear after taking on a ball from Song, but goalie Wapenaar was equal to his shot. Only in the thirty-second minute did Feyenoord create another real opportunity. Bombarda whizzed past Vreven to deliver a fine cross that found Emerton on the edge of the penalty area and the Aussie cracked home the ball to give the home side the lead. The goal didn’t really set Fyenoord free however. Anthony Lurling might have changed all that on halftime when he found himself one on one with Wapenaar, but the ball wasn’t going in. Feyenoord came out for the second act unchanged, but before long Paauwe had to limp off, to be replaced by Loovens. Next in was Robin van Persie, who came on with twnety left on the clock for Lurling. Unfortunately, the goal fell on theother side. Song misjudged a cross and the ball fell to Tanghe, who lashed the ball past L’Ami to make it 1-1. Van Marwijk brought on Pierre van Hooijdonk to rapturous applause just after the equaliser, and the big man was given a chance from a well-placed freekick almost immediately, but the ball struck the wall. Van Hooijdonk did break the Utrecht defence down in the last minute though, threading the ball through to Biuffel, who in turn set up Bosvelt to chip the ball over Wapenaar into the net to secure all three points for the home side.
