A double strike within 120 seconds half way through the second half secured the three points for Feyenoord at the Kuip Sunday afternoon in a hard-fought game against Eredivisie newcomers FC Zwolle. The visitors threatened Patrick Lodewijks goal several times in the first period, but goals by Shinji Ono (pen) and Mariano Bombarda handed the home side the victory they so desired ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League all or nothing at home to Newcastle United.

In the opening period it was FC Zwolle that started best, carving up the Feyenoord defence on more than one occasion in the first fifteen minutes, but the first half’s best opportunity was created by Gyan, who sent Emerton on his way. The Aussie made haste through the midfield, before laying the ball off for Lurling on the edge of the box, but Lurling was unable to get his shot on target and the chance was wasted. More chances were to follow. Lurling was unable to finish off what Kalou stared and then Ono set up Kalou, who couldn’t trouble the keeper however. Zwolle were showing that they had come to Rotterdam to get something out of the game and Promes in particular was causing the home team problems. After twenty minutes he escaped the attentions of both Rzasa and Gyan to latch onto a long clearance from his keeper, but his effort was touched onto the bar and over by Lodewijks. It was a warning Bert van Marwijk was willing to listen to and Feyenoord started the second half with Robin van Persie on the pitch as a replacement for Gyan. As a result Song moved to rightback and Lurling went out onto the wing as Van Persie took up his favoured position on the left. On the hour Van Marwijk was forced to make his second substitution when Kalou was kicked out of the game. Mariano Bombarda was his replacement, although he had little impact early on. It was Tomasz Rzasa who eventually opened up the Zwolle defence. The Pole found himself in the penalty area with space, only to be bundled over by Richard Roelofsen. Ono slotted home the resulting penalty to hand Feyenoord the lead. One goal quickly became two, when Bombarda pounced on an Ono cross to direct the ball between the posts with his head and it was game over.
