SCIFO TALKS UP BUFFEL – AND HIMSELF

Former World Cup star Enzo Scifo has hailed Thomas Buffel as the coming man of Belgian football. Speaking to De Gazet van Antwerpen the great man wasn’t quite able to put Buffel ahead of himself in the rankings: ‘I was better, more of a genius,’ but he was fairly complementary nonetheless. ‘I really like Buffel. He gets involved and isn’t afraid to do something special – a breath of fresh air for the national team.’

But Scifo, who represented the Red Devils at four World Cups in a career that took him to Anderlecht, Inter Milan, Bordeaux and AS Monaco, was magnanimous enough to admit that his rise to the top of the Belgian game wasn’t instantaneous. ‘I didn’t become the focal point overnight,’ said the man who was sacked as coach of Sporting Charleroi recently, thus giving Buffel something to aim for.
