LOPEZ NIETO TO REF FEYENOORD-JUVE

Brett Emerton will be hoping for better luck with Lopez Nieto Wednesday, when the Spaniard takes charge of Feyenoord’s Champions League opener at home to Juventus. The Spaniard was the man in the middle in last season’s UEFA Cup semifinal against Inter Milan when the Aussie was harshly shown a yellow card for timewasting, a decision that cost Emerton an appearance in the final. Lopez’s assistants are Giraldez Carrasco and Chirino Rivera.

Antonio Lopez Nieto is a very experienced referee with a reputation for being hard but fair. So while he did once booked sixteen players in one game – an unenviable record if ever there was one, he also blew the whistle on Dynamo Kiev when management at Feyenoord’s future Champions League opponent tried their hand at bribery, an allegation denied by said management by the way.
