The Rotterdammers were quick out of the blocks, no doubt with a mind to wrap up the game early on and conserve some energy for Tuesday’s Euro adventure. Emerton (on the right) and Kalou (in the middle) looked set for a good night. That brought chances for the visitors early doors. Ono went close with his head on five minutes, and five minutes after that Van Hooijdonk used his own head to send Bosvelt’s cross goalwards, only for goalie Kujovic to beat the ball out. Ono pounced on the rebound, but directed his effort over the bar.
The goal that did put Feyenoord in front was as much down to soft defending as incisive attacking. Via Bosvelt and Kalou the ball ultimately ended up at Paauwe’s feet inside the penalty box and the defender had more time and space than he should ever have been allowed to stroke home.
Instead of quitting though, Roda JC came back strongly. Even then, the home side didn’t look like scoring until referee Bossen and his assistant were caught napping as Soetaers smuggled the ball past a stranded Zoetebier with his hands to leave himself with a simple tap in to equalise.
The second half saw Feyenoord reined in somewhat, as Roda managed to stem the threat posed by Emerton. Roda also started to attack with more regularity and Van Marwijk was forced to throw on Robin van Persie for Anthony Lurling on the hour. The best chance for the visitors came from the other wing however, when Gyan crossed beautifully, but Kalou’s header crashed against the post and out.
Leonardo was the next to enter the arena, but the introduction failed to have the same effect as it did Sunday against NEC. Thankfully however Feyenoord also has a certain Pierre Van Hooijdonk. He was there to do his party trick with 9 minutes remaining, converting a freekick to hand his side the lead.
Unfortunately they were not able to hold on to it however. Five minutes later Soetaers scored from a freekick of his own to level at 2-2.
