STOCKHOLM SWITCH FOR ELMANDER

Johan Elmander has agreed a ten-month loan deal that takes him to Djurgården from 1 September. The Under-21 international comes in to strengthen last campaign’s Allsvenskan runners up ahead of the club’s autumn UEFA Cup push, but will return to Rotterdam in time for the start of next season. The Swede remains part of the Feyenoord squad for Saturday’s game at Roda JC, but will not travel with the club to Istanbul and Monaco next week.

Johan Elmander arrived in Rotterdam in the summer of 2000. After a wonderful start the youngster was unable to establish himself in the team with the arrival of Pierre van Hooijdonk. ‘I miss playing a lot,’ Elmander admits. ‘So this is the best solution for me. I won’t get much first team football this season either. I’m realistic enough to realise that I am the third choice striker behind Van Hooijdonk and Kalou. I hope to become stronger in Stockholm by playing games.’ Feyenoord sees the move as a valuable stimulus in the player’s career. ‘At his age he has to develop and so he has to be playing every week,’ technical director Rob Baan explained.
