The young Chilean did not disappoint.
The proximity of next week’s CL qualifier meant that Feyenoord were a little more eager to put in a well rounded display than they might have otherwise been against the amateurs. The Rotterdammers started with gusto and were fully concentrated at the back, where Gyan began on the right, with Van Wonderen and Paauwe in the middle.
In attack too the signs were promising. Lurling showed once again that his preferred position is on the left, while both Kalou and later Buffel looked good there too. Kalou even scored the best goal of the night, when he took the ball into the penalty area before executing the perfect lob. That brought the score up to 0-3, as Lurling and Van Hooijdonk had both claimed a goal by then.
Van Hooijdonk’s strike in particular was a real boost. The goalgetter’s recovery from recent surgery is a big plus for coach Van Marwijk and the goal from a free-kick signalled that the big man is well on the road to the proverbial.
Feyenoord brought on Pardo at the start of the second half, as well as Van Haaren and Buffel on the hour, but it didn’t affect the rhythm in attack with goals from Lurling and Van Hooijdonk, before Buffel whacked in three in as many minutes to put his side eight ahead by the end. More importantly though, the Rotterdammers came through the ninety minutes without any worries on the injury front, just 96 hours before Tuesday’s visit of Fenerbahçe.
