BUFFEL AND COLLEN IN RED DEVIL CALL

After declaring his intention to blood new players in the Belgian national team, Aimé Antheunis threw down the gauntlet Wednesday, when he included two young Feyenoorders in the preliminary squad for the Red Devils trip to Poland on 21 August. Pieter Collen and Thomas Buffel were both included in the new coach’s list. Antheunis is set to announce his final squad next week.

Pieter Collen couldn’t hide his surprise when he heard the news. ‘I hadn’t expected that yet,’ admitted the right back. ‘I know that Antheunis knows about me, because he wanted to buy me when I was at AA Gent and he was at Anderlecht. A whole new group is emerging and it would be nice to be part of that. I’m training hard, things are going well with my injury, but I do have to play. That’s the only way to prove I’m worth the callup.’ Thomas Buffel was glad with the news, albeit a little reserved. ‘I was included in the preliminary Belgian Under-21 squad a couple of times last year and ultimately I didn’t get picked. So I’ll just wait and see, but it would be a tremendous honour if it comes to pass.’
