BUFFEL CATCHES BELGIAN COACH’S EYE

Reward for the excellent progress made by Thomas Buffel has come in the shape of a call-up to the Belgian Under-23 squad. The player was last season’s player of the year in the first division on the way to promotion with Excelsior, and the appointment of a new Belgian national coach Aimé Antheunis means the striker is now gaining recognition from his homeland too.

According to Belgian newspaper ‘Het Laatste Nieuws’, the chances are that Buffel’s stay in the Under-23s could be a short one. New boss Antheunis is desperate to unearth a replacement for Marc Wilmots and Johan Walem, now that both have announced their retirement from international football. The paper reports that the young Feyenoorder’s star is rising fast in Brussels after impressive preseason displays for the UEFA Cup winners.
